Acyclovir
Acyclovir
Mechanism and Usage
An antiviral drug, Acyclovir (Zovirax) is used for slowing the growth and replication of the herpes virus. Please note, that Acyclovir will not cure herpes and does not remove the virus itself. The person treated with Acyclovir is able to infect others.
Acyclovir capsules are used to treat (and / or surpress) such infections as genital herpes, shingles, and chicken pox. Acyclovir may also be used for purposes that are different from those listed above.
Dosage and Taking
Treatment should be started as soon as possible, preferably, with the first signs of herpes (blisters, burning, and pain). Keep to the recommendations of a healthcare professional.
Capsules are taken orally (possibly, with food). Taking a lot of liquid with Acyclovir is recommended.
Take Acyclovir for the entire period as prescribed by your physician, especially, when dealing with acute manifestation of the virus. Note that you might feel better before the infection is completely cured. Acyclovir is reported to show better results during suppressive treatment when taken at the same time daily. Consult with your physician for additional information.
Skipped Dose
If you failed to take Acyclovir and if you take it regularly, do it as soon as you will be able to. If it is nearly the time for the next dose, just forget it and keep to your regular scheme. Double dose is not recommended.
Storage
Room temperature is preferable (20–25 C) for keeping the medicine. Only short exposure to extreme temperatures is allowed (below 15 C and higher than 30 C). Protect Acyclovir from high temperatures, light and humidity (your bathroom is not the right place for it). Keep it away from children and pets.
Safety Information
Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines as there is a risk of their interacting with Acyclovir capsules. Special attention should be paid to the kidney-harmful drugs. Their combination with Acyclovir increases the risk of possible side effects. Be sure to inform your physician if you are taking cyclosporine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), tacrolimus, aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin), vancomycin, amphotericin B (ibuprofen) or ask him in case you are unsure of the nature of your medicines.
Additional Info
Acyclovir capsules were prescribed only for you. Do not share them with others and do not take them without recommendations of a healthcare professional. If the symptoms persist, or your stage becomes worse, consult with your physician. In case of any questions about Acyclovir, turn to a healthcare professional.
