Smoking accelerates multiple sclerosis progressing

SmokingAccording to the new research published in magazine Archives of Neurology, at smoking sick of a multiple sclerosis illness progresses faster.

Authors of research, doctor Alberto Ascherio from School of public public health services at the Harward university and its colleagues, also have established, that at smokers progressing form multiple sclerosis at which the condition gradually, but steadily worsens, rather than intermittent at which deterioration of a condition of patients is marked only in aggravations is more often develops.

"Most hard disease proceeded at people who continued to smoke, - doctor Ascherio speaks, - but these are good news as refusal of smoking gives possibility to facilitate a condition of patients".

It is known, that at smokers above risk of multiple sclerosis, but researches of influence of smoking on current РС yield inconsistent results. Scientists observed 1465 patients РС within on the average 3 years or hardly more. Among examinees of 17,5 % smoked.

From 891 patients whom the group of researchers observed about speed of multiple sclerosis progressing from one form to another, the condition has worsened at 72: at 20 from 154 smokers, at 20 - from 237 patients, stopped to smoke, and at 32 - from 500 never smoking patients.

It means, that at smokers for the specified period of supervision primary multiple sclerosis progressing met in 2,4 times more often, than at the non-smoking.

By the end of the period of supervision among smoking patients there was above an invalidity level, their condition was heavier, and the atrophy of cages of a brain has been expressed more strongly, than at the non-smoking. Besides, in due course at smokers the quantity of the damaged cages in a brain and degree of their atrophy faster increased.

The mechanism of influence of a tobacco smoke on multiple sclerosis progressing, according to researchers, is not clear. Smoking is connected with a number of autoimmune diseases, including with rheumatoid an arthritis so in pathogenesis the immune factor can matter. Besides, the tobacco smoke can have direct toxic influence on nervous system.
