Mechanism and Usage
Clomicalm (clomipramine hydrochloride) helps to overcome separation anxiety in dogs. Clomicalm does not refer to the sedative group of drugs or to the tranquilizers. The medicine is a tricyclic antidepressant affecting certain chemical processes and reactions in the dog's brain. Clomicalm is sometimes prescribed for treating other behavioral issues including obsessive-compulsive disorders and aggression. Clavamox may be used by the veterinarian for other purposes not mentioned here.
Dosage and Taking
The standard recommended dose in dogs makes 0.5-1.5 mg per pound a day.
Clomicalm may be used in cats, but with care as they react to tricyclic antidepressants more readily.
Safety Information
Clomicalm is not compatible with monoamine oxidase inhibitors. The course of Clomicalm begins only in 2 weeks after the dog had been treated with Preventic Collar, Mitaban Dip, or selegiline.
Clomicalm may also interact with muscle relaxants, pain relievers, other antidepressants, sedatives, anxiety medications, antihistamines, etc. causing drowsiness. Any new medication including herbal and natural remedies is highly recommended for discussing with the dog's veterinarian.
Do not forget to inform the veterinarian if your dog has a history of hypertension or heart disease, liver or kidney problems, issues with stomach or intestinal system, asthma, glaucoma, thyroid disease, urinating problems, diabetes, seizures.
Ask for additional consultations if the dog is lactating or pregnant.
Clomicalm Side Effects
Known side effects in dogs include allergic reactions with swelling of soft tissues and difficult breathing, a fast or irregular heartbeat, fever with increased panting, too relaxed or stiffed muscles, seizures, urinating problems, elevated blood pressure. Stop giving the medicine and seek for veterinary medical help right away if any of the states listed above occurs.
In case of unusual or troublesome reactions do not stop the treatment and consult to the veterinarian. These may include loss of weight, lack of appetite, nausea, dry mouth and eyes, dizziness and headache, stool retention, drowsiness and weakness, agitation.
