Simplicef
Mechanism and Usage
Simplicef (Cefpodoxime proxetil) is an oral cephalosporin used for treating canine skin infections including abscesses and wounds. Its advanced spectrum covers susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus; Escherichia coli; Staphylococcus intermedius; Pasteurella multocida; Streptococcus canis (group G, hemolytic);Proteus mirabilis. A semi-synthetic antibiotic, Simplicef is offered in tablets.
Dosage and Taking
The standard dose of Simplicef is 5-10 mg per each kilo of the pet's weight. The exact prescribed dose depends on the nature of the infection and the state of the dog. Other key factors are the activity of its host-defense mechanisms and the susceptibility of the strain in question. Sensitivity and culture plating is highly recommended from a sample of the pathogen. The results would become a proper base for further antibiotic therapy.
The drug is taken orally once a day, possibly during eating. The standard course makes 5-7 days with the maximum of 4 weeks. In case 3-4 day’s treatment of an acute state gives no result, it should be stopped. Continue to give Simplicef to the dog during the whole time as prescribed by the veterinarian. The medicine is to be taken for 2-3 days after the signs of the infection had vanished.
Simplicef is not intended for humans!
Simplicef Storage
The recommended storage temperature is 4–30 degrees C. Store the medicine away from pets and little children.
